Analysis of the UK disaster restoration sector, from the market leaders at ServiceMaster Restore UK.

The disaster restoration market’s services encompass water, fire, mould, and storm damage.

This can include emergency response, cleanup, repair, and restoration of residential properties.

The market has been growing steadily, driven by increasing natural disasters, ageing infrastructure, and heightened awareness of the importance of quick and effective restoration services.

In this blog post, the industry leaders at ServiceMaster Restore discuss key market drivers and opportunities in the UK disaster restoration sector.

THREE Key Market Drivers you need to know about

  1. Increase in Natural Disasters

With climate change contributing to more frequent and severe weather events, there has been a notable rise in the demand for disaster restoration services.

Floods caused by storms have become more common, prompting homeowners to seek professional help for restoration and repair.

  1. Insurance Industry Dynamics

Insurance companies play a significant role in the disaster restoration market. As policies evolve to cover more types of damage and insurers focus on quick settlements, there is a greater reliance on professional restoration services to meet these requirements.

ServiceMaster Restore works closely with Insurers, loss adjusters and assessors.

  1. Technological Advancements

Innovations in restoration technology, such as advanced drying systems, mould remediation techniques, and non-invasive moisture detection tools, (all of which ServiceMaster Restore utilise) have improved service efficiency and effectiveness.

These advancements help restoration companies deliver better results, increasing customer satisfaction and repeat business.

THREE Opportunities for Franchise Partners

  1. Building Strong Community Relationships

ServiceMaster Restore recommends franchise partners build strong ties with local communities to enhance brand reputation and trust.

Participating in community events, offering educational workshops on disaster preparedness, and forming partnerships with local businesses can boost visibility and credibility.

  1. Leveraging Digital Marketing

An effective online presence is crucial in today’s market.

All ServiceMaster Restore franchises benefit from unlimited marketing support to give them the utmost support when investing in digital marketing strategies, including search engine optimisation (SEO), social media engagement, and online reviews management, to attract and retain customers.

  1. Focus on Customer Experience

Providing exceptional customer service is key to success.

Prompt response times, transparent communication, and high-quality workmanship can lead to positive reviews and referrals, which are invaluable in this industry.

THREE Key Factors for Success

  1. Training and Certification

Ensuring team members are adequately trained and certified in the latest restoration techniques is vital.

ServiceMaster Restore includes thorough training as part of the franchise academy and encourages continuous education to stay updated with industry standards that can enhance service quality and compliance.

  1. Investing in Equipment

High-quality, modern equipment can significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of restoration work.

A suitable starter pack of the latest products and equipment is included in the initial fee.

All franchise partners should regularly update their tools and technology to stay competitive.

  1. Building a Resilient Workforce

Recruiting and retaining skilled technicians is crucial.

ServiceMaster Restore can support the recruitment of technicians or any role within the business.

Offering competitive wages, professional development opportunities, and a positive work environment can help build a loyal and dedicated workforce.

ServiceMaster Restore is one of three ServiceMaster UK brands to team up with LAPS to offer lucrative and scalable franchise opportunities to former professional athletes.

Have you ever wondered what happens to athletes after they retire from their sport?

That’s where LAPS come in.

Life After Professional Sport (LAPS) is a careers resource platform offering advice, networking and job opportunities for future, current and former athletes.

Our partnership

As partners, three ServiceMaster Brands UK brands – ServiceMaster Clean, TruGreen, and ServiceMaster Restore – are three of ten brands that work exclusively with LAPS to provide entrepreneurial opportunities to former athletes across a range of sports.

These sports are typically football, cricket, tennis, rugby and athletics, but they have supported sportspeople in sports like snooker, cheerleading and more to build their new life after retiring from the sport.

The ServiceMaster Restore UK Franchise Opportunity

ServiceMaster Restore franchisees not only salvage and clear up the after-effects of fires and floods, but they also help with smaller unexpected disasters that occur in the home, such as spills and stains. With Restore, there is no job which is too big or too small. Their franchise owners have seen it all!

ServiceMaster Clean is the longest-standing franchise offered by ServiceMaster, operating since they first brought our carpet and upholstery cleaning services to the UK in 1959, alongside additional services like disaster restoration.

Since then, the ServiceMaster Restore brand has become its own entity, synonymous with exceptional service, the highest standard of tailored professional disaster restoration services and technological advancement both behind the scenes and in their service offering.

Through unique systems for success and market-leading products and services, they’re always looking ahead for ways to advance professional disaster restoration in the franchising space.

Their next advancement offers exceptional franchise opportunities to athletes looking to step off the podium while still keeping it clean.

Alan Lewin, Managing Director of ServiceMaster Brands UK, says:

“There are a lot of similarities between what makes a great professional athlete and a brilliant entrepreneur. From discipline to motivation, commitment and the desire to play to win. Our partnership with LAPS is a way we can help sportspeople bridge that gap and become great business leaders.”

“Our brands present an opportunity for athletes to find their next steps through a scalable management franchise, all while benefitting from years of business experience, a proven model and centralised support from a renowned franchisor to help them be in business for themselves, not by themselves.”

ServiceMaster Brands UK Franchise Recruitment Manager Matt Fowler adds:

“ServiceMaster UK is proud to partner with Life After Professional Sport, supporting their members as they transition from professional sport into new chapters of their lives.”

“Together, we’re united in our aim to provide essential resources and guidance for those considering a franchise as part of their new chapter. I am delighted to have secured this partnership and look forward to working closely with the LAPS Team and their members.”

Robbie Simpson, former professional footballer and LAPS co-founder, adds:

“LAPS was founded to help sportspeople understand their huge potential in the workplace and connect them with opportunities and dynamic businesses that recognise that potential.”

“Sportspeople are a hugely diverse bunch, and here at LAPS, we work with businesses in various ways. Franchises can be a great way for athletes to build their own businesses with a supportive team behind them. ServiceMaster Group share our values in understanding what athletes can do in the business world, and we can’t wait to see what this partnership yields.”

Meet the new owner of the brand-new ServiceMaster Restore franchise business in Bath and Bristol.

ServiceMaster Restore is a nationwide disaster restoration franchise which has operated in the UK since 1959.

The brand’s latest franchisee, Edgar Thoemmes, comes from a small business background, having set up three businesses over the last 15 years and built them to a high standard.

His latest venture, a ServiceMaster Restore franchise covering Bath and Bristol, uses his wealth of experience to oversee a less typical operation: disaster restoration.

The work of disaster restoration professionals can take many shapes.

But it’s safe to say it’s not your average day job, as it can involve cleaning and restoring properties after disasters like fire and flooding, biohazards and trauma scenes.

It is also safe to say that sometimes, we can all be guilty of harbouring some morbid curiosity around this line of work.

So much so that it has even inspired ‘The Cleaner’, a recent BBC TV show starring Greg Davies.

But what makes someone start work as a disaster restoration professional? And what does their work mean for the general public?

We sat down with Edgar and his new General Manager, Adrian Matusik, to discuss their new business and the value of their services to the local community.

Their roles

As General Manager, Adrian will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of ServiceMaster Restore Bath and Bristol, with Edgar driving the business and its expansion from a strategic point of view.

“Altogether, we bring more than 75 years of experience across different fields, which we all specialise in,” says Adrian.

Adrian has been led to ServiceMaster Restore through his interest in construction.

“I’m fascinated by construction,” he says.

“How things were built 1000 years ago, a hundred years ago, and how we are going about it today.”

Naturally, Adrian’s background includes 15 years in construction management.

He began as an on-site labourer before progressing through management to become a Senior Site Manager and won multiple awards for his attention to detail and site management skills.

He says this gave him plenty of valuable expertise, which he can use in his new role.

“Construction management is all about problem-solving and being efficient and honest. My construction background will give me a wealth of knowledge to restore the product to the highest standards and ensure the customer is happy.”

“[I’m] looking to build out a team that can scale quickly, so it’s vital that we get that team in place from day one,” Edgar adds.

Therefore, he began hiring early, with Adrian being the perfect first recruit.

“[Adrian has] got so much experience [and] expertise in his area and the right attitude and hands-on approach [to] the work [and] supporting customers,” says Edgar.

What can you expect from ServiceMaster Restore?

ServiceMaster Restore is a disaster recovery and specialist cleaning company with the experience and latest equipment to handle difficult and potentially grizzly situations quickly and with understanding and compassion.

Whether it’s:

  • Leak Detection
  • Trauma cleaning
  • Fire and smoke
  • Flood and water
  • Leak detection
  • Graffiti and Vandalism
  • Mould removal and inspection

ServiceMaster Restore will help restore property damage or trauma in the first 24 hours.

“Our goal is to offer a complete end-to-end disaster recovery solution for property managers, brokers, [and] facilities managers,” Edgar says.

Because of his background, Adrian is well prepared to serve clients in the Bath and Bristol region thanks to his keen eye for detail and excellent customer skills.

“The customer is there to be helped, and we are there to help. I would like us to be associated with a positive approach,” he says.

“From the day we meet the customer, they can always count on us to ensure that they are fully taken care of and that the property is restored to the highest finish possible.”

He says he is excited to begin supporting people in the local area and delivering satisfaction to them in their time of need.

“Seeing other people in the franchise that are delivering excellent quality and seeing happy faces on customers is really exciting,” he says.

“I think it’s priceless. You’re helping people with something terrible that happened to them, and it’s like Christmas has come early for them. It’s something that has no price tag.”

Turn the corner using a proven franchise business model.

A franchise is the perfect route if you want to be in business for yourself but not by yourself.

They offer the benefit of an established brand, a proven business model and support in the areas where you need it.

There are almost 48,000 franchise businesses in the UK, and many brands to choose from.

But this much choice can be a little daunting. Analysis paralysis is real. It’s so easy to get caught in its safety net.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a few pointers to help set you on your way to breaking free from the 9-5.

Why are you looking at a franchise?

It’s important to know what your ‘why’ is. Why do you want to go into business?

Here are some common whys:

  • “I want to be my own boss.”
  • “I’ve noticed a gap in the market.”
  • “I can do it better than they do it.”
  • “I want a better lifestyle for my family.”
  • “I want to invest my redundancy/inheritance.”

Once you know why, it’s easier to find something suitable.

What are your options?

Your options are likely narrowed down by the available territory, cost, commitment, and credentials required to join.

Taking all of those into account, you’ll still find yourself with a lot of options. Choose the one most suited to your ‘why’.

Then, do your research.

Simply for ease, online research is the best place to start.

Methods of online franchise research:

  • Take a look at franchise directories
  • Read published franchise articles
  • Check associations like the BFA (British Franchise Association)
  • Visit franchisor websites
  • Follow social media channels for a broad and varied spectrum of opportunities.

For offline research, speak to franchisees and ask for advice from respected sources.

Where possible, utilise the franchise opportunities’ services for insight into the business.

Enquire & Engage

Once you have narrowed your search, enquire with the franchise brands that most suit your ‘why’.

Now is your opportunity to conduct more in-depth research and to form a relationship with the franchisor.

In franchising, relationships are the bread and butter. They make the world go around.

So, make sure it clicks. The business and the brand feel right for you to take advantage of the opportunity.

ServiceMaster Ltd. is committed to aiding your research, ensuring your decision to join us is right for you.

Anyone can buy a franchise.

The myth that you have to be cash rich to buy a franchise business is just that. A myth.

Entrepreneurs from all walks of life can buy a franchise through inheritance, redundancy, savings and, of course, finance.

Getting your ‘house’ in order

Obtaining finance is easier if you have a good credit history and have your business plan ready.

Your credit history is something that you nurture over time. It’s an opportunity to show the banks and lenders you are creditworthy.

I.e. you will pay them back what you owe them.

A good business plan is a detailed one.

It should include what the money borrowed from the bank will be used for and how you will pay it back.

Fortunately, lenders like franchise models because they tend to be proven.

As such, they are less of a risk to borrow against.

How much do you need?

It’s a good idea to consider the amount you’ll need to borrow.

Much is associated with franchise costs that aren’t included in the ‘start-up package’.

These typically include office equipment, vehicles, premises, registrations and insurance.

So, it’s vital to factor in these costs so that you ask for enough finance to cover all aspects of the business but to leave some ‘afloat’ for unexpected costs and cash flow.

What to ask your lender

Ask your lender about their credit terms, such as amount, duration, fees, rates, covenants and any payment holidays you might be eligible for.

Sources of funding

Most major banks, including Lloyds, Barclays, HSBC, and NatWest, to name just a few, support the financing of franchise businesses.

Some specialist lenders will also lend to those with a good credit history and a strong business plan.

Finance can open doors for individuals looking at franchise opportunities who don’t have the complete investment.

Speak to your high-street bank or a franchise finance lender for further information.
